April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month. At New Outlook Homecare, we have cared for several clients struggling with Parkinson’s. It is a disease that slowly inhibits a person’s ability to move, speak, swallow, comprehend clearly among a variety of other symptoms. It can be devastating to watch a loved one go through it. According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed each year and more than 10 million suffer worldwide. Men are 1.5 times more likely to have Parkinson’s disease than women.

However, there is hope and researchers have made great strides. The Parkinson’s Foundation has directly funded the studies that have led to:

  • The development of the first standard tool to measure Parkinson’s progression
  • Established what is now the largest movement disorders training program in the world
  • The discovery of the first PD-associated gene called alpha-synuclein, which has proven critical to new treatments under development

Yet, more research needs to be conducted in order to find a cure. To learn more about Parkinson’s or to speak to a professional, contact the Parkinson’s Foundation at 1-800-4PD-INFO (473-4636) or helpline@parkinson.org. If you feel like you would like to support those suffering or to help fund research, consider donating online.
