In recognition of skin cancer prevention month, the American Academy of Dermatology is encouraging everyone to become a “skin cancer hero” by performing regular skin checks on both yourself and your partner. Melanoma is the most common cancer in the United States. However, when spotted early it is highly treatable.

Anyone can get skin cancer, regardless of skin color or age. It is estimated that 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Yet, this can be prevented. Wearing sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher every day, staying out of the sun, avoiding tanning beds, wearing protective clothing and being extra cautious around water, sand, and snow, as they’re reflective surfaces, are all ways to help prevent skin cancer.

In addition, it is helpful to learn the ABCDEs of melanoma detection.
A= Asymmetry
B= Border
C= Color
D= Diameter
E = Evolving

See the infographic above for further information about how to check yourself regularly and for more information about skin cancer, visit the American Academy of Dermatology’s website and/ or make an appointment with a dermatologist in your area each year.
